You Shop, We Donate, Everyone Wins

This Friday, June 14, will be a great day to shop at Gossett Nursery. On that day, the nursery will donate part of the daily sales to the Lewisboro Relay for Life event that is scheduled to take place on June 21.

This is a great charity for a worthy cause and Gossett Nursery is proud to take part of this local event. If you are in the market for something for your garden, home or landscape, stop in this Friday and get quality plants, trees, shrubs and garden supplies while helping your neighbors and friends.

Below you will find an event schedule from the Relay for Life website. If you have the time, stop by the John Jay High School track to witness and participate in this moving event.

    Opening Ceremony: 7pm

The Opening Ceremony brings everyone together for a high-energy event kickoff to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to inspire hope by sharing recent accomplishments and progress, and to remind everyone that while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority.

    Survivor Lap: 7pm
During the Survivors Lap, upbeat music plays as all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track cheered on by the other participants who line the track, celebrating their victory over cancer.

    Luminaria Ceremony: 9:30pm
The Luminaria Ceremony is a time to remember people we have lost to cancer, to support people who currently have cancer, and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.

    Fight Back Ceremony: TBA
The Fight Back Ceremony symbolizes the emotional commitment we each make to the fight against cancer. The action we take represents what we are willing to do for ourselves, for our loved ones, and for our community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives
    .
    Closing Ceremony: 7am
The Closing Ceremony is a time to remember the lives of those lost and to celebrate that each of us has committed, through our participation in a Relay event, to fight back against this disease over the next year.

The "Coast of Maine" is in your Backyard

For the 2013 garden season, Gossett Nursery has added a new soil and mulch vendor to bring to you the very best that the market offers. Coast of Maine mulch and soils has a variety of products that will meet every need that your garden and landscape demands. Below you will find what we sell at the Nursery from Coast of Maine and a little bit about the products.

If you have questions about any of the Coast of Maine products, you can stop by this Saturday and talk to Sue La Vallee who is taking a trip to Gossett Nursery from Maine. Sue will give you all the details of any of the Coast of Maine products and an insight as to how they are made. So if you need quality soil or mulch and want to try something unique and organic, stop by this Saturday during the Farmers Market to meet Sue and treat your garden or landscape to the best of what nature has to offer from the Coast of Maine.

    Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost

The original "seafood" compost. Made with chitin-rich lobster blended with peathumus and compost. The result is a dark-brown, complex soil that drains well and is ideal for conditioning beds and borders. Great for vegetable gardens. One of our best sellers! We have named this blend for Passamaquoddy Bay, or "Quoddy" for short. The bay marks Maine's easternmost border with Canada and its deep, nutrient-rich waters, protected inlets, strong tides and currents make it ideal for salmon farming.

Bar Harbor Blend Premium Potting Soil

Bar Harbor Blend is our organically approved, all-purpose potting soil. It is a rich, dark brown and full bodied, designed for re-potting house plants, planting hanging baskets, window boxes and all containers. Bar Harbor Blend is made with lobster and aspen bark compost, long staple horticultural grade sphagnum peat moss and perlite. Like all compost-based soils, this too requires less watering. We've named this blend for the town of Bar Harbor, located on Mount Desert Island overlooking Frenchman Bay. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park and one of the jewels of the Maine coast.

    Wiscasset Blend Earthworm Castings

Gardeners have long known that there's magic in worm castings. Use to enrich potting soil with active biology and plant ready minerals or top-dress your indoor container plants to give them a boost. Castings can also be brewed into a quick compost tea by mixing with water, molasses and aerating overnight.

    Schoodic Blend Cow Manure Compost

Schoodic Blend is a dark, rich soil made from carefully composted cow manure and peat humus. The cow manure for the Schoodic Blend, that is composted in Maine, comes from Pineland Farms Natural Meats in Aroostook County Maine. Their beef herd is raised without the use of antibiotics or growth hormones. The composted manure is combined with aged peat humus, a unique carbon source that is rich in organic material, lignins and tannins. The result is a naturally light-weight, easy-to-use soil.

    Dark Harbor Blend

Dark Harbor Blend is an exceptionally rich, fine-textured blend of naturally composted barks, ideal for mulching beds, borders and gardens and for use around shrubs and trees. It will help retain moisture without robbing your soil of nitrogen and help insulate the surface soil against excessive cold and heat that can otherwise damage plant root systems. Because Dark Harbor's barks are almost completely decomposed, it can be dug into your beds and garden in the fall, providing your soil a rich and immediate source of organic material. We have named this blend for the picturesque island village of Dark Harbor on Isleboro Island in Penobscot Bay.

    Mothers Day Celebration

This Saturday is “THE Saturday” at Gossett Brothers Nursery. Besides the Farmers Market, Gossett Brothers is privileged to once again host the annual Mothers Day weekend fundraiser for the Lewisboro Garden Club. If their was ever a time to come in and get your garden questions answered, this would be it. On Saturday all the members of the Lewisboro Garden club will be working with the Gossett staff to help you choose the best annual, perennial, shrub or tree. It is a once a year event that is not to be missed!

Traditionally, this is one of the busiest weekends of the summer season and all week long we have been receiving deliveries. The Nursery is stocked to the gills with a great selection of plants, shrubs and trees. So whatever you are looking for, come on in this Saturday and browse every nook and cranny of the Nursery with the members of the Lewisboro Garden Club to find some of the best of natures offerings.

The Lewisboro Garden club is also sponsoring a bake sale on Saturday. Homemade pies, cakes, cookies and other tempting treats will be on sale. One of the great services that the Lewisboro Garden Club provides to the community is the “Golden Roads” program. This program, which has been a great success for the past 5 years, encourages homeowners and businesses to line their properties with daffodils. The Garden Club also coordinates mass plantings of daffodils along public roadways and this year they will plant thousands of plants. You can help support the Golden Roads program, and help beautify our town roads. Just ask any of the Lewisboro Garden Club folks for more information.

Remember, candy is dandy, but Plants have zero calories! So come and find the perfect plant for Mom and bring her home some of the best organic and freshest food in Lewisboro.
